Happy Tails
It was early May 2005 and I decided that I was finally ready to bring a dog into my home. I always felt like a beagle was a good dog for me. Their size was very appealing, and the fact that they are just so cute just sealed the deal! After doing internet research, I contacted the Nittany Beagle Rescue. On their website was King, 3, a handsome beagle that I felt would be a good match to my personality. King had a rough life and was passed through many homes during his short life and was, at the time, in foster care. Soon, I was off to State College to pick up this shy and fearful pup. The first few days were rough but I never considered giving up on him. Although he will never admit it, I think he may have wanted to give up on me! On a family trip to Vermont, King finally got into his niche and bonded with not only me, but the rest of the family.
Several months later I volunteered to help out the rescue and was asked if I’d like to foster a dog. After long consideration, I decided that it would be good for King to have another dog to help him relax and come out of his shell a bit more. Shortly thereafter, I was contacted about a dog in at a local shelter that needed a home. Benson too had a rough past, but based on his demeanor, I decided that he would be a good fit for King.
As soon as he got home, he met his new best buddy, King. It was obvious that Bennie just needed some love and attention, along with a bath and a good brushing. His cute little face and rabbit soft fur quickly made him a favorite among the neighbors who just wanted to pet him and rub his belly. Bennie and King often visited my parent’s home and became quite a pair together, known as the Two Beagle Mafia. Bennie started to grow a spot in all of our hearts and wrap us around those cute little paws of his. He gained a special fondness for my mother who he would stand next to in the kitchen and “help” with meal preparation.
In June, Bennie left my home to live with another family. This adventure was short-lived. He was returned to me within 36 hours because Benny possessed some separation anxiety that the family was not willing to properly deal with. After some sole searching, my parents decided that they were ready once again to have a dog in their home. Bennie moved in right away and has made a great companion for my parents. His antics have been curbed some, but his mind is always working on the next scheme…
